I had a Doctor come up to me after my speech at the Rotary club and ask me if I had any suggestions for him to help with the RX abuse epidemic.
I asked him:
“Do you ever inquire about family history regarding addiction issues in the patient’s family?”
He said he did not, and I told him that I wished the doctor had asked me that question when Brandon was prescribed Vicodin for a broken arm as a young teen.
Hindsight being what it is, I know I would have told him about my father, who is an alcoholic. I would have told him about my brother, who is a drug addict. I would have liked to have been asked this so we could have discussed non-opiate drugs as an alternative to treat his broken arm. As a regular Joe, I didn’t know there was a risk for this. I had never heard about hillbilly heroin. We assume the docs are the experts on these things, and if we need to know something, they’ll tell us, but it ain’t necessarily so.
