The “Candy Man” (an unoriginal moniker for certain) supplied OxyContin, Vicodin, Norco and other drugs to addicts with no legitimate need for the powerful narcotics. Some of his customers paid him in sex. Some diverted the pills to the black market. At least twelve of them since 2006 suffered fatal overdoses, including one man who died in November who had been prescribed 2,087 pills before he died.
This “Candy Man”, according to an AP article that appeared in 1/6/12 Sacramento Bee (A4), was a physician in Santa Barbara, California, ( refined SoCal! not Kentucky or Florida) who apparently had complaints against him dating back 15 years, and patients who travelled hundreds of miles to see him. Other doctors, who noticed that “patient after patient [showing up in the ER] hooked on prescription drugs shared the same physician.” Follow up article here. Medicine madness.
Now, him? This “Candy Man?” Lock him up. He, of all the people in the chain, should know better.
More about this at this site, which looks like another resource for oxy activists/addicts.
These doctors are tempted by the quick buck and leave their morality in their golf bag.
These doctors have sold their souls and they have cashed the check.
Doctors are feared by investigators and prosecutors because, quite frankly, they are difficult to convict due to the perception of a juror (we are brought up to believe that doctors are somehow closer to God) and the endless stream of character witnesses a doctor can produce to prance in front of a jury raving about how Dr. Pill-pusher “saved his life.” I think perhaps the high profile case of Michael Jackson’s physician, and his blatant disregard for the life of a human being (let alone all of the facts that pointed out how Michael Jackson’s doctor cared more about chatting with his girlfriend than performing CPR) will hopefully knock the lid off what doctors can get away with. How little our government watchdogs seem to do about it, yet the cop on the beat is working his rear end off to pick up the end user.
PS: Rx Drug Abuse affects all kinds of families. If it has affected you and you would like to help raise awareness– if you have a business that could benefit from weekly am and fm radio exposure, please contact me immediately. I am looking for a white knight to ride in to sponsor a Saturday KFBK show I’ve been invited to do. Send an e mail to brad@rxdrugaddict.com.
